HONG KONG PROVISIONAL URBAN COUNCIL

Oil stains on top of vegetables detectable by the eye may be pesticide. -Funny smells may indicate pesticide residue.

The above observations help one to detect poisonous vegetables. If nothing is detected, as a housewife, one should:

-Clean vegetables thoroughly with water;

-For safety, vegetables should first be fully immersed in a saline solution for an hour so that any pesticide residue will be washed out;

-Finally, vegetables should be well cooked before they are eaten and water for cooking vegetables should be discarded.

Our citizens should be able to follow the above simple rules to avoid food being stained with pesticide residue. I am sure the Health Education Section and Health Education Centre can spread the above simple message widely to our community.

I will personally seek to implement the above measures within my work area and abilities. Thank you.

CHAIRMAN (in Cantonese):—Will the mover of the motion exercise his right of reply?

MR. WONG KWOK-HING (in Cantonese):—I thank Members for their support. I am particularly pleased to hear the Chairman's expert advice and his 5 points of suggestion. I am also pleased that the Chairman of the Public Health Select Committee has offered constructive ideas.

Based on the opinions of Members, I hope to, after the motion has been passed, urge the Department of Health for a comprehensive review and ask for a review document on prevention of harm from poisonous vegetables. With such a paper, the Council can proceed to scrutinize measures and take action.

Secondly, I would like the Department of Health to set up an inter-departmental working group on poisonous vegetables after this motion has been passed. Several departments are already joining efforts to tackle this problem. Nothing will come of it if not for the joint efforts of departments.

Thirdly, I hope the Chairman of the Provisional Urban Council and the Chairman of the Public Health Select Committee will lead a visit group to the mainland soon for inspection and information exchange. The problem must be faced jointly with the commercial inspection bureaus of Shenzhen and Guangdong and discussions must be held on how to resolve the matter. As we know, methamidophos is banned in the mainland, but it is still used by Getihus for convenience and other irresponsible producers. Therefore, there is need for us to exchange information with mainland authorities as well as to hold regular reviews.
