The fifth part of the question asks if the Council have any plans to improve and replace the obsolete and outdated facilities at Turtle Cove Beach within a short period.

The Department has plans to improve the changing rooms and toilet facilities at Turtle Cove Beach in 1997/98. The lighting along the footpath will also be improved. Regarding the problem of inadequate water supply for showering, the Architectural Services Department has advised that this problem is due to the distant location of the beach from mains water supply. The improvement works will take longer time and will involve higher cost because of its isolated location. The Department will continue to work closely with the Architectural Services Department to complete the improvements as soon as possible.

MR. DANIEL TO BOON-MAN (in Cantonese):-Mr. Chairman, I have three follow-up questions. About the inter-departmental working group on shark prevention, how does it cooperate with the Urban Services Department? What are the details of cooperation? How can we ensure that shark nets are not damaged? That is my first question.

The second question about the deteriorating water quality at St. Stephen's Beach and the rising level of E-coli. Is it related to infectious diseases and is that beach safe?

My third question concerns the last part of the question on facilities at Turtle Cove Beach. The reply document states there has been improvement, but can a time schedule be set and the Council be informed of the cost? I would like some concrete answers, please. Thank you.

MR. RONNIE WONG MAN-CHIU (in Cantonese):-About the inter-departmental working group, as far as I know, several departments including the Marine Department, Marine Police, Government Flying Service, Civil Aid Services are involved with the Broadcasting, Culture & Sports Bureau as the co-ordinator. As to ensuring the safety of swimmers by checking to see if shark nets are damaged, the maintenance contractor is responsible for giving periodic reports. The contractor has to inspect the nets every day and present a number of weekly reports to the Committee, notifying us of the latest situation concerning shark nets.

Concerning the deterioration of water quality at St. Stephen's Beach, I believe you are aware that the Environmental Protection Department issues periodic reports in respect of beaches everywhere in Hong Kong. If the said Beach is listed as poor and unsuitable for swimming, you will read about it in the newspapers.

As to the date of completion of maintenance works at Turtle Cove Beach, it is in fact stated in paragraph 11 of the reply document that works will be carried out in 1997/98. The regular practice is for such a programme to be
