ADDRESS BY CHAIRMAN

I.

CONFIRMATION OF THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 14 OCTOBER 1997

The minutes of the meeting held on 14 October 1997 was confirmed.

II. PAPERS LAID

The following paper was laid:

Report to the Provisional Urban Council by the Secretary of the Provisional Urban Council for the month of October 1997.

CHAIRMAN (in Cantonese): The next item on the agenda is Questions. The first question is supposed to be raised by Ms. CHOW Kit-bing but as she is not present, would another Member please raise the question on her behalf? Would Ms. TING Yuk-chee ask the question for her? Ms. TING please.

III. QUESTIONS

(1) Ms. TING YUK-CHEE asked on behalf of Ms. CHOW KIT-BING (in Cantonese): 'Victoria Park is not only the place where Hong Kong people spend their leisure time on public holidays, but is also the park where tourists and overseas domestic helpers like to visit. Since the visitor flow has risen in recent years, the amount of litter left behind in the Park has increased accordingly. Some park-goers doing morning exercises in the Park have even complained to me that on the day following public holidays, there were often heaps of litter left uncollected in the Park. Some of the litter emitted foul smell which adversely affected the image and the environmental hygiene of the Park. Therefore, I have the following questions:

(a) How much litter in Victoria Park is collected by the Department during public holidays? What is the increase compared with normal weekdays?
