Mr. WONG feels the function for children to be left temporarily in play rooms should be changed to catering for their activity needs. I think the Select Committee can study it and review whether there is any need to change the main function of these rooms. Yes, we can discuss it in the Select Committee.

As for Mr. WONG's wish for short term improvement so that children can have more facilities during the upcoming Summer vacation, I think I have responded. My feeling is same way as Mr. WONG. I would ask the Department to follow up by extending opening hours and increasing facilities so that there will be more facilities for our citizens this Summer.

CHAIRMAN (in Cantonese):—If there are no more follow up questions, we shall return to the first question. Will Mr. CHAN Choi-hi ask the question standing in his name, please?

1. MR. CHAN CHOI-HI asked the following question (in Cantonese):-

(a). According to the UC and USD Statistical Report 1995-96, the number of performances of the Council's three performing companies (i.e. the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and the Hong Kong Dance Company) increased by 7.8% in the year 1995–96. Yet, the attendance rate decreased by 16.9%, mainly due to a 31.8% drop in attendance at the Chinese Orchestra performances. Was there any decrease in the attendance rate of performances of the other two performing companies? If yes, what was the decrease? What were the reasons for the decrease? Does the Department have any improvement measures?

(b) What is the amount of subsidy paid by the Department to the above three performing companies in 1995–96? If divided among the audience who attended the performances of the three companies during that year, what is the average amount of subsidy for each person who attended the performance of each company?

(c). In the year 1995–96, the average overall attendance rates of performances staged at different venues by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and the Hong Kong Dance Company were 90%, 76.7% and 58% respectively. The seat vacancy rate in respect of performances of the Hong Kong Dance Company was the highest. Has the Department considered distributing some of the unsold tickets to senior citizens free of charge, through the community centres and centres for the aged at each district, so as to provide them with some free entertainment?

MR. PAO PING-wing, Chairman of the Culture Select Committee, replied as follows (in Cantonese):—Mr. Chan's first question was based on the
