HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL
Of course, in order to strengthen the Council's role, allocation of more funds is inevitable. As this involves the general allocation of resources, I am sure Members and political parties will have different views. I think we can sit down and go over this slowly so as to arrive at a line acceptable to all.
Mr. Chairman, the ADPL thinks that different levels of sports development are closely inter-twined. At the consultation meeting last night, representatives of some clubs suggested the 'large triangle' status. We, the Urban Council, are one of the promoters. With limited resources and years of hard work, the Sports Development Board has been able to train several contestants for world sports titles. Its achievement is indeed remarkable.
However, without the financial assistance of the Central Government, the work of the Urban Council and the Sports Development Board can only achieve half of the desired results regardless of their dedication. At present, the resources put into different levels of sports development have benefitted the general public and provided opportunities for people with potential. We have positive results. If the Central Government can provide more support and commitment, we believe that we can do even better in our sports development.
Mr. Chairman, to sum up, I must say that we share the view of the original motion as well. However, based on the above mentioned reasons, I speak to support the amended motion.
MR. LEE KWOK-KEUNG (in Cantonese):—Mr. Chairman, I can understand that many people were recently concerned about sports. Two of our athletes won gold medals at two Olympic games. Our Members have always been enthusiastic in discussing about sports development. Recently, we have set up a Working Group on drafting the 5-year plan. As I understand, today's original motion has already been discussed by the Working Group and it will be discussed again at future meetings.
I support the motives of the colleagues who moved the original motion and the amended motion respectively. In the amended motion, I think the mention of co-operation with the Central Government or urging the Government to make greater commitments for sports development is very important. As such, we support the amended motion. I hope that the Working Group can further discuss assistance to finance sports activities for the disabled. We don't want to overlook sports activities for the disabled.
Mr. Chairman, I have spoken in support of the amended motion.
MR. KWOK BIT-CHUN (in Cantonese):—Mr. Chairman, members of Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) in this Council support the amended motion by Ms. Grace Au Yuk-har. The main reason is that the amended motion is more comprehensive, but we are not negating the original motion moved by Ms. Ada WONG.
