HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

members of the public to book recreation and sports activities and venues at any Council sports venues. According to my understanding, the Regional Council will also install a computerised booking system in all its recreation and sports venues. Since the Urban Council and the Regional Council have already linked up their computerised systems for library facilities and cultural activities, may I ask whether the Council has any plans to link up the two Councils' computerised systems for recreation and sports so that the citizens can book any recreation and sports activities and venues in any sports venues? If the answer is affirmative, what is the timetable for implementation? If the answer is negative, what are the reasons?

Ms. GRACE AU Yuk-har, Vice-Chairman of the Recreation Select Committee replied as follows (in Cantonese): The question consists of three parts. The first part asks whether the Council has any plans to link up the two Municipal Councils' computerised booking systems for recreation and sports facilities and activities so that members of the public can make their booking at any sports venue. The second part asks for a timetable for implementation if there is such a plan. The third part asks for the reasons if there is no such plan.

The SPORTIX Phase I computerised booking system was introduced in May 1992 and only allowed booking of table-tennis, tennis, badminton and squash courts on Hong Kong Island. SPORTIX Phase II was successfully launched in November 1995 and so far has been a success. Currently at 57 venues, 10 district offices and 2 telephone booking centres, the system provides the computerised booking of Council's sports facilities, the enrolment of recreational activities and booking of the holiday village at Lei Yue Mun Park,

As SPORTIX Phase II was only launched recently, the Department is observing the operation of the new system. A review will be carried out in 1996/97 on whether the system should be enhanced.

On the other hand, the Department has regular liaison with the Regional Services Department and is aware that the Regional Council is also examining the feasibility of allowing cross-booking of different Regional Council's sports facilities across their own venues. Whilst at present there are no plans to link up both computerised booking systems of the two Councils, the matter will be kept under view and further discussed between the two Departments when details concerning cross-venue booking service for Regional Council sports are available.

MR. TAM KWOK-KIU (in Cantonese): I would like to ask a question for clarification and I also have a follow-up question. In the reply it is said that the SPORTIX was implemented by 2 phases and Phase II was launched in November 1995. I would like to know whether the SPORTIX is and will be provided in all existing and future UC sports and recreational venues. Please clarify this.
