THE HONOURABLE Szeto Wah (in Cantonese):—Last night, around 6.00 p.m. or 7.00 p.m., I went to the Ngau Tau Kok Market. It appeared to me that the fans had not been cleaned for 2 or 3 years. The fans were moving but you could not feel the air movement because the dust particles had accumulated inside the fans. I don't know whether the maintenance of fans is undertaken by the Overseer or not? Is the emergence of this problem related to the shortage of staff?

MR. IP Kwok-CHUNG (in Cantonese): Mr. Chairman, I think this question is unrelated to the escalator incident, but it may give rise to the question of manpower deployment. The Market Sub-committee has recently examined the market facilities and operations and it was agreed that the Department should progressively set up Market Advisory Committees which will consist of operators and tenants. There is also a suggestion to invite the DB Member and UC Member concerned to take part to give more input. I think with the introduction of this practice, the situation as mentioned by Mr. Szeto Wah will be improved further. I think as this is a matter of cleanliness, it will be referred to the District Health Superintendent who will inform the contractor to pay special attention to this problem.

(7) MISS ADA Wong asked the following question (in Cantonese):—There are reports that because of a lack of annotations on individual exhibits and their artistic characteristics in the 'Heavens' Embroidered Cloths—1 000 Years of Chinese Textiles' Exhibition, currently being held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, unless visitors buy the exhibition catalogue it will be difficult for them to appreciate the exhibits and know that there are state treasures among the 200 plus rare cultural relics. I would like to ask:

(a) What are the objectives of various exhibitions organised by the Museum of Art and on what principles are the exhibitions run? If they are visitor-oriented, what are the ways to facilitate visitors to appreciate the artistic characteristics and significance of the exhibits?

(b) What remedial measures will the Museum of Art take to make new arrangements and provide detailed introduction to the characteristics of exhibits so as not to waste the manpower and physical resources expended on this Exhibition?

Mr. Mok Ying-fan, Chairman of the Museums Select Committee replied as follows (in Cantonese):—This question concerns the arrangements for the 'Heavens' Embroidered Cloths-One Thousand Years of Chinese Textiles' exhibition organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and is in two parts.

Concerning the objectives and principles of organising exhibitions, the Museum of Art aims to present a diversified exhibition programme to cater for the different interests of the local community. The mission is to raise the level of appreciation of the visual arts among the general public, to bring in visual stimuli, ranging from the ancient to the new and from the east to the west, for
