HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

Council, the Regional Council have again joined hands to issue pamphlets to tell people precise information so that everybody is made aware of personal hygiene in the fight against cholera. Now just this pamphlet in my hand, the information contents are very good and concise. It has reminded the citizens time and again that within the pamphlet it has stated that after toileting, we should wash our hands but again of course in some restaurants, there are staff members who ask for tips for letting people wash their hands and in this way, it may hamper our publicity efforts. Mr. Chairman, I must mention this in passing here that is from the records of the patients of cholera this time according to what I know there are no young people, nor children who were infected, this may be attributable to several reasons. One of them, I believe is school education in Hong Kong have all along done a very good job. I hope the educationalists or teachers at the beginning of the school year will try to make use of the best teaching methods to continue guiding our young people in this area and also to foster our liaison with parents regarding the prevention of cholera and the knowledge of so doing. I would like to cite my poem for my conclusion: Pay attention to the hygiene and so the bacteria will not infect us, be careful with food hygiene is better than injection, Government and people cooperate so we can have better welfare, we must kill the cholera devil together. Mr. Chairman, I support the motion.

CHAIRMAN (in English): I may say it doesn't sound so good in English, I think the Cantonese is a lot better.

MISS CECILIA Y. S. YEUNG (in Cantonese): Mr. Chairman, I am indeed very glad as the Chairman of the Food Hygiene Select Committee has got the support of so many colleagues and I am very glad that the USD staff are so efficient in their performance. Mr. SULKE is rather reserved in giving praises and this time Mr. SULKE also thinks that the USD's performance is commendable that this proves that the USD staff have worked very cooperatively and very successfully to prevent disaster outbreaks in the area, so I think we all know the good performance of the USD staff, so I would like to thank everybody again, I would then support the motion.

CHAIRMAN (in English): Exercising the right of reply?

MR. PETER C. K. CHAN (in English): I just thank all the colleagues for their long and informative speech in supporting the motion.

The question was put.

The motion was carried unanimously.
