ADDRESS BY CHAIRMAN

CHAIRMAN (in English):--Ladies and Gentlemen, the meeting is called to order.

MINUTES

The minutes of the meeting held on 8 October 1985, were confirmed.

STATEMENT BY CHAIRMAN

CHAIRMAN (in English):-I wish to begin this month's public meeting by extending a very warm and sincere welcome to the visiting Macau Municipal Council delegation headed by its distinguished Council's President, Major Carlos Amorim Algeos Ayres.

As our two territories are in such close proximity, I hope that this visit will mark the first of other exchange visits in order to strengthen the goodwill and cooperation between us. I am sure that Macau shares with us in Hong Kong the desire to exchange views and experiences so as to provide better municipal facilities and services for the improvement of living conditions of the people of our two cities.

I now have the honour to invite the President of the Macau Municipal Council to address us. (applause)

STATEMENT BY MAJOR CARLOS AMORIM ALGEOS AYRES, PRESIDENT, MACAU MUNICIPAL COUNCIL

He said (in English):-Mr. Hilton CHEONG-LEEN, Chairman of Urban Council, distinguished members of the Urban Council, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is with great pleasure that the Macau Municipal Council received an invitation from you, Mr. Chairman, to be present today at the Hong Kong Urban Council. For the first time, since we assumed the mission of chairmanship of Macau Municipal Council, we felt the necessity of having a firm relationship with you and the members of your Urban Council, so this was the reason for our courtesy visit in 1984 and for others made at various levels.

The urban councils have a very important role in the present world. They have the duties of looking after the development of their cities, the necessities of the population who live and work there, the fields of activities are very large and the responsibilities very big. Regarding their work, they expect to look after generally the same things and we feel that nowadays, there is a strong need for the urban councils of various geographical areas to exchange points of view

between them, to try to find a better life for those whom they need to serve. Many times, it is only a matter of attention to local activities and exchanging experience with each other. We share the same principles and have obtained useful and important information from the contacts we made.

Regarding your Urban Council, I wish to express on this occasion, our deepest gratitude for your hospitality on our various visits, for your open hearts, for how you openly confide of your experience, for your invitation and care in preparing our visits, which covered a very large area from solid waste disposal, to gardens, slaughter-houses, markets, kennels, cultural areas and public exhibitions. We are sure that other steps can be made for more exchanges by agreement in the future especially in the cultural area. We are especially dedicated to international friendship, this is a thought not only from the Municipal Council, but also from the Governor of Macau and we both wished to give the people a better view in this area.

The aim of Macau is to make it a place worthy to be chosen for business, sports and also cultural events in line with its characteristics, capacity and proximity and to make those areas an important attraction to the life of our city. The new art gallery was opened in our own building of Leal Senado situated in the city which consequently is easier for access. Very soon, we will put into work the new center of visual arts next to the museum of Luis de Camoes. This will surely be a new perspective to the present and future activities of Macau. Other cultural activities are being planned and we hope to have them done very soon.

I know of your interest, Mr. Chairman, in establishing communication between the two cities and the friendly ties established after your last visit was an honour for us. On our part we will do our best so that our mutual intentions can soon be accomplished. Another activity will be to develop future contacts, and you are convinced that there is a link of cooperation and friendship which have existed long ago between us and also between the populations of Macau and Hong Kong. At our level, we will certainly be able to establish channels for strengthening of relationship through further contacts and visits between the two cities. I am sure that because of the proximity of the population, Hong Kong and Macau will be much benefited. We believed the idea is manifested and in future meetings we hope to be able to match concretely and objectively the forms and services offered, if such an idea is agreeable.

Mr. Chairman and members, I do not intend to prolong too much, I would like to express my warmest thanks to Mr. Chairman, the kindness of your words and gratitude extended to us by your members. In conclusion, I would like to express a sincere vote of thanks in my name and the members of Municipal Council of Macau present here, for the best happiness and prosperity to you and all the Urban Council of Hong Kong and also to the population of Hong Kong. (applause)

(Dr. Denny HUANG and Mr. Edmund Crow arrived during the address.)
