MR. SULKE (in English):-Mr. Chairman, in view of the reply, will the department re-consider the charges for swimming pools?
MR. Lo (in English):--Mr. Chairman, if there is a need to, we would certainly review the charges, but I think not in respect of the low attendance this year which I personally think was caused by the scare about the infectious disease.
DR. CHAM (in English):-Mr. Chairman, would the Council make sure that with good publicity, we should clarify all these rumours about contagious disease in swimming pools?
MR. Lo (in English): ---Mr. Chairman, I think the least said about the subject the better. If we say nothing, then by the time the next swimming season starts, everybody will have forgotten about it and they will happily be swimming at the swimming pools again without incurring any risk of infectious disease.
MR. HU (in English):—Mr. Chairman, could Mr. Lo advise the Council the extent of admission charge for the swimming pool? What is the percentage of the subsidy the general public is enjoying at this moment?
MR. Lo (in English):--Mr. Chairman, the degree of subsidy we were trying to achieve was about 70% which was based on the attendance rate of the previous Swimming season. This year, it looks as if that we are very much down, so therefore the degree of subsidy will have gone up beyond that.
3. MR. WALTER M. SULKE asked the following question (in English):--The Seaview Building at Repulse Bay Beach does not appear to be fully utilized. Since with the present stringency of funds there is little likelihood of the building being redeveloped, are there any plans to refurbish it so that the whole building can be used instead of only a bit of it as at present?
MR. KENNETH T. C. LO, CHAIRMAN OF THE RECREATION SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows (in English):-This question concerns whether there are any plans to refurbish the Seaview Building at Repulse Bay Beach with a view to making full use of the vacant rooms in this building.
The Department has had in mind for some time a proposal whereby the upper floors of the Seaview building could be converted into changing rooms to supplement those already available in the building and which are rented en-bloc to a private contractor on a tender basis.
The estimated costs of refurbishment and conversion of the premises are now available and, in conjunction with the Rating and Valuation Department, an appropriate level of rental has been established.
Since the expansion of changing facilities amounts to an extension of the existing contract, negotiations are presently under way between the department
