HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL
Second point is the hawker problem. I would like to raise three points. Firstly our economy should be reviving this year and our hawker policy for the last two years must, one way or another, be affected by our economic situation. So now the economy is reviving, we should look into our hawker policy. Secondly, we have a bigger expenditure on hawker control, actually this is a passive expenditure, not very active and not very constructive because we cannot solve the hawker problem. I think we should also review this aspect. Thirdly, on hawker bazaars, we have built quite a few hawker bazaars, but what are their effects? How many hawkers actually use the hawker bazaars and do their business there, or are these bazaars served? Have we ever thought about any alternative use to which to put these bazaars? If we cannot persuade the hawkers to move into the bazaars, we must use the bazaars for some other use. Lastly, I support the motion before Council.
ADJOURNMENT - 4.31 p.m.
CHAIRMAN (in English): - I know you will want me to congratulate our new Member, Mr. Henry LUK, on his maiden speech in the Council. The speeches will all be studied by the Urban Services Department as to those parts which concern their work. Those which refer to the Government or other Government departments will be sent to them for appropriate consideration.
The Annual Conventional Debate will resume and conclude on Tuesday, 10th February at 4.00 p.m. Council stands adjourned until that day.
