HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

QUESTIONS

(1) MISS KO SIU-WAH asked the following question (in English):

The Urban Council summer programme ended at the end of August. Can the Council be given an assessment on the success of the programme?

MR. PETER P. K. NG, CHAIRMAN OF THE ENTERTAINMENT AND ADVERTISING SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows (in English):

Mr. Chairman, the Urban Council summer entertainment programme started at the end of June and finished at the end of August. Special functions including swimming parties (with swimming and lifeguard demonstrations) and launch picnics were organized for young people and school children during the summer vacation period. Twenty-three swimming parties involved over 20,000 children from various districts. Ten launch picnics with two launches on each occasion were enjoyed by about 3,000 children. Seven variety shows jointly organized with various Kaifong Associations and other organizations such as the Y.M.C.A. attracted some 15,000 people. Except for one swimming party which was cancelled due to inclement weather, the summer programme items were held in fine weather and were generally well received. The success of the programme can be judged by the attendances at all functions and the obvious enjoyment of the young people who participated. The Select Committee is examining whether the programme can be expanded next year to include more items to benefit more children, and to ensure a more equitable distribution throughout the community. Any suggestions from members of the public to achieve this aim will be most welcomed. Apart from these special functions, the Council continued to present general entertainment items such as variety shows, Cantonese operas, concerts, puppet shows, film shows, youth dances and roller skating demonstrations and the total attendance for the months of July and August was approximately 141,000 people.

Miss Ko (in English): Mr. Chairman, may I be informed if there has been any evaluation programme on the summer programme? If so, when will the report be released?

MR. NG (in English): Mr. Chairman, yes, we have in fact sent out various evaluation forms to all parties concerned who have assisted us in the summer programme, but I don't think we can come to any conclusion from these forms alone. But as I said, judging from the attendances, some of the functions were so well attended that "crowd control" was our major problem.

(2) MR. PETER P. F. CHAN asked the following question (in English):

May I know when the equipment for our planetarium is expected to arrive from Germany? If the arrival is far earlier than the date of completion of our Planetarium Hall, do we make provisions for its storage and during that interval, can we possibly use the equipment to earn income? If the Planetarium Hall need not be in a free standing building, can we possibly use the Exhibition Hall in the City Hall or any other suitable accommodation?

MR. LO TAK-SHING, CHAIRMAN OF THE CITY HALL SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows (in English):

Mr. Chairman, the contract for the supply and installation of planetarium equipment from Carl Zeiss Co., Ltd., Germany envisages delivery in August 1975. The equipment is complex and intricate and is designed for the projection of stars on a large hemispherical projection dome. It therefore has to be housed in a purpose-built building and cannot be used in other accommodation. The Cultural Complex Sub-Committee set up by the Standing Committee of the Whole Council, which dealt with the previous recommendation of Recreation and Amenities Select Committee to recommend the purchase of the planetarium, has given preliminary consideration to the siting and schedule of accommodation of the planetarium in consultation with the Public Works Department. It is to be built as part of the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Complex on the site of the present Kowloon Canton Railway Terminal. The site is due to be vacated in the summer of 1975 and the hope is that construction work will start immediately upon the site being made available when the Planetarium will be given first priority in the building of the Cultural Complex.
