HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

(2) MR. PETER P. F. CHAN, CHAIRMAN OF THE CEMETERIES, CREMATORIA AND FUNERAL PARLOURS SELECT COMMITTEE, moved the following motion (in English):-

"THAT the Funeral Parlour (Amendment) By-laws 1974 be made under Section 123 of the Public Health and Urban Services Ordinance."

He said: I would like to draw Members' attention to the matters covered by the amendments. These are:-

(a) Deletion of the definition of supervisor as no such post now exists.

(b) Making it a requirement to have a separate ventilation system for premises used for embalming or preparing a body for burial.

(c) Changing the Chinese characters to the correct one for "NO ADMITTANCE”.

(d) Allowing entrance in the register to be made in Chinese as well as English.

(e) Making the funeral parlour indicate specifically the final disposal of remains.

(f) Amending and bringing up to date the list of persons who may inspect the register.

(g) Making it an offence for a licensee not to keep a register under By-law 13.

Mr. Chairman, I would like to add that these amendments had been agreed by the Cemeteries Select Committee as well as by the Standing Committee of the Whole Council, may I so move.

MR. B. A. BERNACCHI (in English):—I would merely like to thank Mr. CHAN for the clear and precise method that he used in introducing this motion. In a few lines, he has explained very clearly what amendments are desired.

MR. PETER P. F. CHAN (in English):— Mr. Chairman, in addition to that, I have prepared a schedule showing the original by-laws with the amendments.

Before I adjourn this meeting, I would like to mention how sorry we are to see Miss Ko Siu-wah leave us. with us since December 1972. In that period of time, she has served as Vice-Chairman of the City Hall Select Committee and has been a Member of other Select Committees as well. Members will recall her very strong advocacy of the Play-Leadership Scheme and how this Miss Ko Scheme has moved forward in such an admirable manner. has also rendered good service in the City Hall Select Committee. For myself and also on your behalf, I thank her for the splendid work she has done in this Council. I wish her abundant success and happiness in the years ahead. (Applause)
