HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

(18) MR. CHARLES C. C. SIN asked the following question:

(a) What is the reason for having a cooked food stall bazaar situated immediately adjacent to a public convenience near or at the junction of Jordan Road and Canton Road, Kowloon?

(b) Is it hygienic for a cooked food stall bazaar to be situated immediately and adjacent to a public convenience, if not what steps will the Chairman take?

MR. R. H. LOBO, CHAIRMAN OF THE HAWKER MANAGEMENT SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows:-

(a) The Cooked Food Stall bazaar in question was established as the result of a decision at a meeting of the Hawkers Select Committee some 10 years ago, to be precise on 14th December, 1961. The purpose was to move some 20 on-street Cooked Food Stalls into this bazaar to provide better control and to reduce general congestion in the streets. The public convenience was then already in existence.

(b) The siting of a Cooked Food bazaar near a public convenience creates no health problems or hazards since both are under health control and supervision.

MR. HU-Where actually is the place, at the junction of Jordan and Canton Roads. Is that outside St. George's Park? That place I did visit, it is a very filthy place. (Laughter). That place is in Kowloon. It needs a general improvement not only for the sake of the staff but for the hygiene of the general public.

CHAIRMAN: ---Thank you, Mr. Hu!

MR. SIN: Mr. Chairman, may I ask a supplementary? Paragraph (b) of the answer says that health control and supervision exists. May I know what supervision is being undertaken? What is the period of supervision, is it daily or weekly?

MR. LOBO:-That is done by your department, Sir, perhaps you can answer that? (Laughter).

CHAIRMAN: I would probably need notice to give you an accurate one but I would like to think that it doesn't take place at regular times on regular days, but is done regularly but at intermittent and unknown intervals.

VICE-CHAIRMAN:-There is an attendant.

CHAIRMAN:-There is an attendant, but I would like to think that senior supervision also pays a visit to the site now and again.

MR. HU: Mr. Chairman, I want to confirm is that the place where the refuse collection stop is situated just outside this bazaar?

CHAIRMAN: --I don't think so.

MR. HU:-Thank you.

ADJOURNMENT — 5.25 P.M.

CHAIRMAN:-Ladies and gentlemen, that concludes the business of the meeting but before we go I would just like to say a brief thank you to Mr. John WALDEN for his services here during his short stay as Commissioner for Resettlement. I believe he will not be at the next Urban Council meeting. Thank you, Mr. WALDEN. Council stands adjourned until Tuesday, 5th October, 1971, at 4 p.m.
