As for Shau Kei Wan, demolition of the old Shau Kei Wan Market began on 15th June, 1970 and a new market, to be built on the same site, is expected to be completed in about a year's time. This market will be a 3-storey building and will provide facilities as follows:

(a) 31 stalls for the sale of meat, fish and poultry

(b) 71 stalls for vegetables and fruits, etc.

(c) a recreation area for children on the roof and quarters for the market staff.

Finally, in resettlement estates, an important feature of the hawker problem has been the illegal hawkers selling fresh provisions. In these places, early provision of proper marketing facilities for the sale of such commodities is essential before the hawker problem can be tackled satisfactorily. We are now embarking on a pilot scheme in the following three areas which are within this Council's jurisdiction—Hing Wah, Sau Mau Ping and Yau Tong. The plan is to provide marketing facilities quickly through the construction of specially designed modules which will, it is hoped, forestall the otherwise inevitable hawker problem. It is proposed to tackle the prevailing unsatisfactory conditions in existing estates in a similar manner in the near future.
