HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

MR. HU:-Mr. Chairman, I am sorry to express my view. I may be not very popular—

CHAIRMAN: ---Are you asking a supplementary Mr. Hu?

(Laughter).

MR. HU:-Yes, supplementary.

Mr. Chairman, everybody did express their view. I think in introducing my supplementary I may say a few words of my view. I think, I am sorry to say, I may not be popular but I am against this Mod Pop-In dance. If this matter was ever discussed in our Select Committee certainly I would have voiced my objection in that Select Committee, because there was no such discussion as Mr. SALES said. It is an important matter and I would voice my objection whatever the name would be I would object to its contents and although I always respect my good friend Mr. SALES I would request him if this matter could be discussed in the future Select Committee, so that the Committee may hear my views in this matter.

MR. SALES: -Mr. Chairman we would be delighted to hear Mr. Henry Hu at any time. Of course in my Select Committee there's a time limit for discussion of various items on the agenda. (Laughter). Now, I must say this, we took the precaution of discussing this matter before Mr. Henry Hu joined the Select Committee. (Laughter).

CHAIRMAN:-I think this has been fairly aired and it will be reconsidered by Mr. SALES' Committee.

DR. BELL:-Mr. Chairman, before you stop us might I just ask Mr. SALES one more question: Does he not think that he must be very square because if you ask any young person to dance nowadays you don't need to say to them that it's "sun chiu” because there is only one way to dance nowadays?

MR. SALES: --I disagree with Dr. BELL and I would like to show her that there are many ways of dancing if she'd only give me the opportunity. (Laughter).

DR. BELL:--Nowadays, Mr. Chairman, is Mr. SALES not aware that there is only one way in which young people dance and if you ask them to a dance they do not expect to do a tango or a waltz.

MR. SALES: -Mr. Chairman, it was never my intention to dance a tango or waltz with Dr. BELL, It was something ultra-modern. (Laughter).

MR. CHEONG-LEEN:-Mr. Chairman, at the next Mod Pop-In could Dr. BELL and Mr. SALES give us a demonstration? (Laughter).

DR. BELL: With pleasure Mr. CHEONG-LEEN, as far as I am concerned.

(Mr. Henry H. L. HU left the meeting at this point).

(22) DR. A. M. S. BELL asked the following question:

Could this Council please have details of the programme that is to be organized by the Executive Officer (Recreation) this coming summer for the youth of the community? Will the programme include swimming galas, competitive games, amateur dramatics, etc. so as to make full use of all the facilities which are available?

MR. A. de O. SALES, CHAIRMAN OF THE RECREATION AND AMENITIES SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows:---

This question concerns the recreation programme which is being organized by the Urban Council throughout the coming summer months for the young people of Hong Kong.

The recent appointment of an Executive Officer (Recreation) was exploratory in nature and designed to test the extent and nature of the demand for organized activities in public pleasure grounds. The public has responded in a most enthusiastic way. An urgent request for additional staff has already been made; I am told that it is being quickly and sympathetically considered in the Colonial Secretariat. An application for supplementary funds amounting to $100,000 has also been made; it will enable the Urban Services Department to engage in activities for which no money was voted in the recent budget. Members of this Council and the public at large are aware of the great success of the first Mod Pop-In. The second Pop-In dance will be held on the 18th of this month.

On 6th April, the first open air concert by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra was presented. 1,200 people attended. The Orchestra will now be encouraged to play in a series of concerts throughout the summer. The three Cantonese operas which were held in Morse Park, Victoria Park, and Southorn Playground attracted audiences in excess of 10,000 each time. Negotiations are in train for more of such very popular shows.

I convened a meeting to co-ordinate the efforts of various organizations which are working towards the same end of providing entertainment and sponsoring activities for our young people. Agreement on broad issues was reached. I intend to call the next meeting soon to ensure that proposals discussed then are implemented without delay.
