reports are made to the Environmental Hygiene Select Committee, and that they do discuss this and ask the P.W.D. to put it right—could it perhaps come into that side of it?

CHAIRMAN:—I think it's stretching the matter too far. You are referring now to the repair of road defects, not to the construction of roads. But I think it arises clearly from my answer that we are dealing here with a development area which is very untidy. I'd be glad to assemble further details and let you have them.

DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS:—Mr. Chairman, I would be glad to find out and let you know as soon as I can get the answer.

(4) MR. HENRY H. L. Hu asked the following question:

Why is there no public toilet facilities at the Kwun Tong Ferry Pier?

THE CHAIRMAN, URBAN COUNCIL replied as follows:

The existing Kwun Tong Ferry Pier is a public pier which may be used by any boat owner. The Hong Kong and Yau Ma Tei Ferry Co. and the Lee On Co. have been permitted to use it temporarily for their ferry services between North Point and Kwun Tong, and Shau Kei Wan and Kwun Tong respectively. A new ferry pier and concourse is to be built by Government about one hundred yards to the south-east of the public pier, and this project is now in Category B of the Public Works Programme.

A site has been allocated for the construction of a 2-seat public latrine at the Kwun Tong Vehicular Concourse opposite the proposed ferry pier. This public latrine is included in the Public Works Programme, in Category B.

MR. HU:—Mr. Chairman, thank you for your answer. I would just ask one question. When could this public latrine be built?

DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS:—Mr. Chairman, it has gone to the Public Works Sub-Committee for consideration at their April meeting, to be upgraded to Category A, and if the recommendation is approved it should start during this year. I can't be more specific than that.

MR. HU: Thank you.

(5) MR. B. A. BERNACCHI asked the following question:

The Urban Council is in charge of cemeteries. As the Reform Club have received complaints from a Buddhist Association and a Christian Association, could the Chairman refer the whole question of private cemeteries being restricted to a particular denomination or faith to the Cemeteries Select Committee?

MR. SOLOMON RAFEEK, CHAIRMAN OF THE Cemeteries, CREMATORIA AND FUNERAL PARLOURS SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows:

At a meeting of the Cemeteries, Crematoria and Funeral Parlours Select Committee held on 28th February it was decided to review existing policies concerning private cemeteries, and the terms under which grants of Crown Land are made to them. I hope that this review will be completed at a very early date.

MR. BERNACCHI:—Mr. Chairman, on point of clarification, this question was submitted before 28th February.

MR. A. de O. SALES:—Mr. Chairman, are you prepared to refer to the Select Committee concerned the fact that this Council has adopted a motion on policy in respect of public cemeteries and cemeteries which occupy Crown Land. This motion was adopted many years ago, just before Cape Collinson was established as a cemetery, both public and private, and that was the unanimous decision of the Unofficial Members of the Council. That policy was not passed by the Governor-in-Council, but it could be now reviewed in the light of the experience that has been gained in relation to our cemeteries—would you be prepared to ask the Select Committee concerned to review this matter in that light?

CHAIRMAN:—This refers to something outside my knowledge. I shall have to look into the facts first.

MR. SALES:—Mr. Chairman, it is very much within my knowledge because I was the Chairman of that particular Select Committee, and in the circumstances would you then ask the Select Committee to consider it?

CHAIRMAN:—I have no objection at all.

MR. SALES—Thank you.

(6) DR. A. M. S. BELL asked the following question:

Could the layout and equipping of recreational spaces in newly developing Resettlement Estates be done "before"
