HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

day of October, 1960, as Notification No. 1590 of 1960, be amended, as follows, under the powers conferred by section 48 of the Public Health and Urban Services Ordinance.

(a) the deletion therefrom of the following "1. Drying of blood."; and

(b) the deletion therefrom of the following-"2. Boiling of blood."; and

(c) the deletion therefrom of the following-"3. Boiling of tripe."; and

(d) the deletion therefrom of the following-"14. Picking of rags."; and

(e) the deletion therefrom of the following-"15. Storing of rags."; and

(f) the deletion therefrom of the following-"22. Scraping of gut.".

He said: Mr. Chairman, this Motion is for the purpose of amending the Declaration of Offensive Trades applicable to the Urban areas, by the deletion of certain trades which are no longer regarded as offensive.

MR. CHEUNG WING-IN: -Mr. Chairman, I beg to second the motion.

MR. SALES: -Disregarding the officialese which is the preamble of this motion, I am asking the mover whether in point of fact the motion is intended to do away with witchcraft in Hong Kong. (Laughter). I draw your attention, Sir, to the following occupations or processes which Mr. WANG proposes to delete, and perhaps eradicate from Hong Kong in the future. The drying of blood; the boiling of blood; the boiling of tripe; the picking of rags; the storing of rags and the scraping of gut, (Laughter), all of which have been associated with witchcraft in the past. My second point this afternoon is to ask you, Sir, whether my friend and colleague, Mr. Wilfred WONG, has been consulted in all this blood letting. (Laughter).

CHAIRMAN:-Mr. WANG, you do not wish to exercise any right to reply? (Laughter).

(Mr. WANG indicated that he did not.).

CHAIRMAN:-In that case, ladies and gentlemen, may I have your vote on this motion?
