set alight and blown by the wind to adjacent sheds, thus spreading the conflagration, resulting in heavy damage and loss of property. In view of the fact that the cause of the fire was due to the flimsy materials used as roofing of sheds, would Government give instructions that all roofings in future should be of tin sheets or non-inflammable materials?

THE COMMISSIONER FOR RESETTLEMENT replied as follows:-

The Resettlement Department requires not only the roofs but also the walls of huts erected in Resite Areas to be clad in tin sheeting or other fire-resisting materials. The same condition is enforced when owners of tolerated structures in the older squatter areas apply for approval to repair or renovate their huts, and when fire victims in squatter areas are allowed to rebuild their huts in the same location.

I do not think it would be practicable to insist on all existing tolerated structures being similarly protected, even if we had the powers to do so. But Members may have noticed that many builders of new, illegal huts such as those at Ma Chai Hang have followed the example set in Resite Areas.
