RESOLVED under By-law 10(1) of the Public Cemeteries By-laws, 1960, that the Director of Urban Services be empowered to exhume and remove the human remains of persons from the graves specified in the following public cemeteries and to dispose of the same by burial, cremation or otherwise as the Director may think fit.

(1) Wo Hop Shek Cemetery, Fan-ling, New Territories. (2) Sandy Ridge Cemetery, Lo Wu, New Territories.

The attention of the public will be drawn to the matter, since the terms of the resolution will be published in the Gazette and notices will be inserted in the Chinese press. Any person wishing to arrange for private exhumation may apply to do so before 20th March, 1964.

He said: Mr. Chairman, as Chairman of the relevant Select Committee I rise to move the motion standing in my name.

To conserve space it is normal for remains in graves in the public cemeteries named in the resolution to be exhumed after burial, and for the remains to be cremated and reburied in the Sandy Ridge Urn Cemetery. The purpose of this motion is to empower the Director of Urban Services to do this in respect of certain coffin burials which took place in 1957 and urn burials in 1961.

THAT under By-law 4 of the Public Conveniences (Conduct and Behaviour) By-laws, 1961, the Council hereby makes the following Order :-

1. This Order may be cited as the Public Conveniences (Charges) (Amendment) Order, 1963.

2. The Public Conveniences (Charges) Order, 1961 is amended by the addition, at the end of paragraph 2, of the following new item-

"(7) Public Latrine in Beaconsfield House, Queen's Road Central.”.

He said: Mr. Chairman, this is one of those routine motions which usually fall on the shoulders of the Chairman of the Select Committee concerned. I cannot claim any particular credit or discredit, except that it happens to be my particular duty as Chairman of the Environmental Hygiene Select Committee.

Mr. Chairman, the purpose of this resolution is to comply with the provisions of by-law 4(1) of the Public Conveniences (Conduct and Behaviour) By-laws, which requires that 10 cents should be charged for the use of any coin-operated compartments provided in public latrines managed by the Council. At present six public latrines have compartments so operated. This resolution will bring the total number to seven, compared with 134 public latrines for which no charge is made.
