The Pest Control Officer is also investigating the most useful measures which he can apply."

DR. P. F. Woo asked the following question

"In July 1956 I raised the question about discrepancies of Chinese characters in many of the street names in the Colony. I raised the same question again in January 1957, and the Street Names Select Committee had then made recommendations which were gazetted afterwards. But up to the present, the discrepancies remain exactly the same and no corrections have been made. Would the Chairman refer this to the appropriate authorities and ask when the discrepancies are to be rectified ?"

THE CHAIRMAN replied as follows:--

"The new street name plates for the 23 streets to which you refer are in course of preparation and will be installed shortly."

MR. CHEONG-LEEN:-May I ask for how long have these street names been in the course of preparation? Since notice of this question was received?

CHAIRMAN :-I regret I do not know how long they have been in the course of preparation, but I understand that they are in the course of installation at the moment.

MR. LI YIU BOR asked the following question

"Will the Chairman consider the advisability of collecting half-yearly, instead of yearly as at present, all hawkers' licence fees which exceed $100.00 per annum ?

It is appreciated that administrative and possibly accounting difficulties will arise, but this will be a great help to many hawkers. I feel that it is a matter in which the co-operation of the Treasury should be sought."

THE CHAIRMAN replied as follows:-

"I am quite prepared to refer this matter to the Select Committee concerned for consideration."

MR. LI YIU BOR asked the following question :—

"I have been given to understand by some residents of Sha Po Road, Kowloon City, that the part of the nullah adjacent to the old entrance to the Air-port has recently become a breeding ground for mosquitoes owing to the accumulation of dirty water caused by repair or other works being done there. Will the Chairman have this matter investigated and steps taken to abate the nuisance?"

THE CHAIRMAN replied as follows :—

"Investigations have shown that the construction work associated with the new runway at Kai Tak has resulted in the filling up of part of the old nullah outlet. A new drain is in the process of construction, and in the meantime a temporary outlet for the nullah has been created, and admittedly, owing to unfavourable falls, etc., a portion of the nullah water does not entirely drain away. Heavy mosquito breeding was found, and appropriate anti-mosquito action has been taken, and will continue until the new drain is completed."

MOTIONS.

MR. A. DE O. SALES moved the following resolution :-

"That this Council recommend to Government the allocation of funds at an early date for the construction of a stadium for the practice of indoor sports at Victoria Park and likewise in or near the projected Kowloon Tsai Park.

And, further, that this Council request the Parks, Playgrounds and Urban Amenities Select Committee to prepare and submit to the appropriate authorities suitable plans and estimates for this purpose."

He said: In proposing the first motion which stands in my name I would like to make certain remarks.

I think we are all here to serve the public interest; as a consequence, we should work together as closely as possible to promote the progress and the well-being of the community. I try therefore,
