into difficulties. Au-drulia already mate her position crystal ehar. She fully supports Untel resistance to Indonesian claim Ta sovereignty over the island and contends that they have no validity. Settlement of the dispute i between the Netherlands and Indonesia, however, will not be such an easy matter. Thus for it has not been passible for members of the Joint commission appointed to explore the problem to reach agreement on a solitary point. The Dutch members have issued an Independent report and Indonesia has sent a further delegation to the Netherlands to thresh on their case and attempt to discover a solution favourable tu jakarta. The basis upon which the two governments approach the question is so different that it is difficult to see how a satisfactory compromise can be renched. The Indonesians have made the extension of their rule to New Guinea a part of their whole

nationalism. The Indonesian President, De Soekarno, has the claim to the country as presented something of a crusade and has pledged Government to prosecule it 17- remittingly. The Dutch, on the other hand, are not prepared to turn New Guinea over to the Indonesians because they are not convinced that the newly Independent Indonesian Government is in

position properly to discharge Автра respawábilities that rule over New Guinea would entail. They point out, quite necurately. that, while New Guinea is Territorially in the generat Indonesian area, it

is not, and never has been. integrally a part of what is now the area of the bidonesian Government. Most im porinul from the Dutch point of view, however, is the fact that inhabitants of New Guinea are still a backward people. There is no affinity between them and the Javanese. Moreover, there is no reason to suppose that the Indonesian Govern- ment in the resources or the skills to do for them what the Dutch enn do n are willing to do. New Guinea could very properly be a field for President Truman's Paint Four applenifun, bu the chance of its heing so used would be far more certain if the area remained under Dutch rather than passed under Indonesian rule. An important factor in the enve is the attitude of Australia. Australia administers Papua, the eastern half of the big island, and so is vitally concerned with the disposition of the western, or Dutch, half. The Australians, despite their sympathetic attitude toward the Indonesian Government, are violently opposed to Indonesian rule for western New Guinen. There is no suggestion of "Imperialism" or "old coloninit" Ju either the Butch

or the Australian attitude. All of New Gulnen has been a "trusteeship." In n sense, for a number of years and the "trustees" believe that it should continue to be so,
