BRITISH ATHLETES DO WELL ON FIRST DAY OF THE EUROPEAN GAMES

Brunela, Aug. 23.

Emil Zatopek, the Czech Olympic Champion, broke his own offi cial world record in winning the 10,000 metres in 29. mins. 12 secs, on the opening day of the European Athletics Championships at the Heysel Stadium here. The official record is 29 mins. 21.2 secs. but the Czech star has run the distance in 29 mins. 2 secs. and his time is awaiting ratification. Zatopek, running a brilliantly judged race, outclassed' his rivals, the pick of Europe's distance runners.

Jack Holden, 43-year-old British runner, won the gruelling Marathon to add it to his Empiro Games title. He took the lead after 20 kilometres and was al- ways in command afterwards to win by 150 yards from the Finn, Karvonen, in 2 Ira 32 mins. 13.8 ccts. The Soviet Champion, Feodosi Vanin, was third.

British athletes had a good day. Besides Jack Holden's victory, Dr Frank Aaron came in fourth in the 10,000 Metres Run in the fastest field for this event ever assembled, his time for fourth place being faster than that which won second place at the London Olympic Games two yours ago.
