HUBERT DOGGART MAY BE ENGLAND'S TEST CAPTAIN

OF THE FUTURE

London, May 28.-Though his experience in first class cricket is limited to len than three seasons, G. H. (Hubert) Doggart, the Cam- bridge University captain, who leads The Rest against England in this week's Test trial, already has performed two feats which have put hia name among the cricket records.

The first occurred in 1948, when he made a sensational debut for Cambridge University against Lancashire. By scoring 215 runs not out on his first appearance for the University he inade a debut more successful than any young player could dare lo imagine.

The previous highest innings for a debut in first class cricket was 195 not out by Ricketts for Lancashire against Surrey at the Oval in 1867.

#

Then last May, Doggart, who is the 25-year-old son of Graham Doggart. former Middlesex cricketer, shared with John Dewes, the Cambridge and Middlesex left-hander, a record England second wicket partnership of 420 runs for the University against Essex,

Bobby Locke Takes 30

Minutes Over One Hole

By ARCHIE QUICK

For the first time in my Bfe I have seen thirty minutes taken over the play- ing of a golf hole by a professional and the British Open Champion, Bobby Locke of Johannesburg.

while His partner, an ex-prisoner of war, captured in the Western Desert serving with the RTR, Bert Kelly, of Eaton, Cheshire, drove his tee shot at the bushes. Örst hole in the £2,500 Tournament at Walton Heath (Surrey) into gorse Although he and Locke, their caddies and some 30 spectators hunted for the maxi- mum five minutes, they found no trace of the ball,

Back Kelly went to the tee, only to duff his second drive, and it travelled but ten yards or so. This meant his caddie going back with another club. Mean- while the next pair of players were waved through by Locke and this entailed further wait.

Then poor Kelly put his next shot into a bunker and his nest into the gorse again for a final, unfortunate 6. But none of these misfortunes apset the iron nerve of Locke, who, with Ossie Pickworth of Australia, is the most dangerous customer in British golf just now,

The Sportsman's Diary LESLIE COMPTON SHOULD BE ON THE RIO TRIP

SAYS BRUCE HARRIS

Middlesex crickei, and Leslie Compton, the wicket- keeper, in particular, can lift England's soccer selectors out of the dilemma threatening to wreck whatøver slender chances England has in the World Cup competition nt Rio.

Months of careful team planning are looking like a waste of time because of a gap at contre-half. There is an obvious need for a strong dominating centre-half, for man like Compton, whose clearances, whether with hend or feet, write finis to any and almost every attack.

It would be a good day for aiderable luxury. Appreciating If the selectors so much comfort he was about English soccer would be big enough to call for to make his presentation in the 11m and Middlesex County lobby when the proprietress
