Mr Wymer Discovers

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, APRIL, 6, 1950.

THE RULES IN FORCE ARE NEW ENOUGH-BUT THE GAMES ARE VERY OLD

BY BERNARD · DARWIN

To compress into a single volume the story of 2,000 years of sport is a task from which the most adventurous author might draw back. Yet Mr Norman Wymer has come near to attempting it in his lately published book, “Sport in England" (George Harrap, London). Wire- history but ly, he says that he does not intend it for an exhaustive

rather for a "Survey of the development of the pastimes of the people," and even that is a tremendous undertaking, of which I find it hard to suggest even the barest outline.

The word "sport" is here used in its most comprehensive sense. In its more particular meaning of the chase in various forms, England has, of course, no mono- poly and can claim no precedence. That belongs to all races from the days when primitive man pursued his food in order to live. As far as England is concerned. William the Conqueror brought with him from Normandy in 1066 a new code and language of hunting which appeared fantastic and affected in the cars of the Saxons. Foxhunting, which with the natural changes of the countryside from open forest to enclosure, gradually superseded stag hunting, we may, I think, claim as a pre-eminently national sport of which Englishmen have spread the gospel in other lands; but it is most of all in point of games and athletic sports that the Englishman has been an originator and a missionary.

The disciples have by this time in many cases beaten the master. It could not be otherwise when certain games such as football and lawn tennie and golf have spread to the ends of the earth, when boxing is a universal pastime and the Olympic Games bring together all races. But England does still retain a certain unique position as the source of the oldest law and tradition.

ALLEN-PRATESI FIGHT TO BE FOR WORLD FLYWEIGHT TITLE

London, Apr. 5.—The British Boxing Board of Con- trol will recognise the fight between Terry Allen, of

Honore Islington, North London, and

Pratesi, of France, which takes place at Harringay on April 25, as for the world flyweight title, which was recently vacated by Rinty Monaghan of Belfast.

At a conference in London today, Mr J. O. Fane, the Chairman of the Board, also referred to the bantam- weight contest between Danny O'Sullivan, the British Champion, and Luis Romero, of Spain, which is due to take place at Harringay on April 25.

Basketball Is Slowly Establishing Itself

As A Sport In England

Basketball, America's biggest contribution to the gamut of International sports, is making a slow but sure growth in Britain. The present year has seen the Introduction of a most successful tournament among the universities of England: the inauguration of a series between the senior universities of Oxford and Cam- bridge; and the staging of a championship between the three Armed Services.

The University Championship, open to all members of the Universities Athletic Union, was won by Leeds; the Oxford-Cambridge encounter which is an entirely private inter-varsity affair, onded in a win for Oxford by 47-11; and tho Services championship went to the Army, with the Royal Air Force second and the Royal Navy third,

The present year has also seen development in other directions "International" maiches betwean England and Scotland have taken place and a number of the big professional soccer clubs hove adopted basketball
