'ALL-ENGLAND BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 1950.
WONG PENG-SOON HAS NO TROUBLE ADVANCING TO QUARTER-FINALS
London, Mar. 1.-Wong Peng-soon, the Malayan ace, who is fa- voured to win the singles title of the All-England Badminton Champion- ships, which opened in the vast Empress Hall arena at Earl's Court here this afternoon, beat J. H. Kellett, the Cheshire Champion, 15-3, 15-1 in the second round.
Siow Watt-soon, a little Malayan law student from Singapore, was beaten 15-4, 15-1 in the second round by England's No. 2, II. R. Marsland.
Wong Peng-soon gave a taste of his strength when he won his first match very easily in 13 minutes against Kellett. The spectators who had gathered near baffling his this court saw the Malayan champion win as he pleased, completely bespectacled British rival throughout.
Whether it was placing the shuttle to the corners, flicking it just over the net or smashing with some brilliant back-handers, the Malayan was the complete
master.
In the first game he ran to 7-1 before losing the service, but got it back immediately and was 9-1 before netting an attempted drop shot. He netted another and Kellett won two quick points, but then Wong, with a beautiful drive to Kel- Jett's back-hund, regained the service and went away to take the necessary points for a 15-3 win.
