ISRAEL'S FREEDOM TORCH—Arthur Louri, right, Consul-General for Israel in New York, presents the Freedom Torch to Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. Sent by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, Israel's torch was flown to the U. S. after lighting beacons throughout the Jewish State to signal the attainment by Israel of its millionth citizen.
FULL FILLING STATION~This filling station of a U.S. highway near Valley Park, Missouri, would be happy to trade its gasoline pumps for one that works with water. The transport truck was abandoned by the driver when it stalled in two feet of water from the overflowing Meramec River. TWO DIED IN THIS-Two soldiers from Fort Bliss, at El Paso, Texas, died in the burning wreckage of this light plane. After taking off, the plane crashed and ignited 38 bales of cotton in a cotton storage yard.
GOOD-BYE AND GOOD LUCK—Charlie Grimm waves goodbye to Wrigley Field in Chicago after resigning as Vice-President of the Chicago Cubs. Twice mannger of the team, Grimm had been with the club almost continuously since 1925.
HARD HIT The worst earthquake Japan has experienced since the Tokyo disaster of 1923 destroyed 874 houses. More than 5,000 other houses were partially damaged by the wave of ibres quakes. Hardest hit was the town of Imatchi where 80 percent of the dwellings suffered damage, and stone houses like the one shown here were demolished.

FREEING THE BIRDS—Amateur sportsman Robert Hogan holds two of the blackbirds he rescued from freezing in Oklahoma City. About 125, of the birds were freed by seven men who chopped away the 18-inch ice which had trapped them. Many of the birds were found dead, while others were fed and then released.
