"I was scared «utt of letting the throttle full nut, all my speet. The speaker? Thirty-eight-year-old Tommy rice, new world Speedway Champlon, after becoming the nest Englishman to win the thie.
What most of the 93,000 fans didn't know was that the dry track was running too fast. All that Price could hear above the noise was the tell into whirr-whire of him by rex,
"I knew if I turned on the best tau much I would slide wide," he satd after the races.
Price is the whyesi of all cha implons. At the dinner-cabairt after the meeting the seat-of-honour was emply. Tommy had gone home.

LUCKY NUMBER FOR TOMMY PRICE
By ARCHIE QUICK
No. 13 was a lucky number for Tommy Price when he won the World's Speedway Championship at Wembley. This 38 year-old rider was the first Englishman ever to win the title, but what impressed me most was the fact that the meeting was attended by 93,000 people-only 5,000 short of the maximum who crowd the huge stadium for the Soccer Cup Final.
Speedway continues to be a magnet; its popularity remains unabated, and the fervour it arouses among the members of its various Supporters' Clubs is equalled only by Welshmen at the Rugby match, Flags, scarves, ties, hats, rosettes, etc, in the appropriate colours are always out in force and the idol-worship has the Denis Compton followers stone cold.
Prico deserved hļa win (and the £500 Arst prize) for he was the only unbeaten competitor in five heats, but in was fortunate in one heat, for he was trailing
Wilbur hopelessly .behind Lamereaux when the American's motor scized.
£250
(with Ruaner-up prize) WRA the popular Jack Parker and a bla surprise was £100) the third place (prizę taken by the young, falrhended| Manchester man, Louls Lawson.
