Akron (Ohio), Oct. 12.—Gonoral Omar Bradley, Chairman of the United States, Joint Chiefs of Staff, admitted today that the Russian atomic explosion had occurred sooner than his mili- tary High Command expected. He said, however, that defence plans wore "well under way."
In a prepared speech to the American Forestry Association meeting here, Gen. Bradley said his staff had made estimates of the time when Russia could be expected to have enough atomic bombs “to influence the outcome of a modern war.” However, he did not disclose the estimate.

Deterioration In Europe's Trade Balance
DESCRIBED AS "ALARMING"
Geneva, Oct. 12. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe declared in its quarterly review today that an "alarming. deterioration" in Europe's trade balance with the rest of the world and the failure of Western Ger- many to carry through her industrial recovery were two of the most important economic problems in Europe in the second quarter of 1949.
While European imports rose from $3,500,- 000,000 during the first quarter of the year to $3,730,000,000 in the second, exports fell from $2,330,000,000 to $2,200,000,000.

This was stated by the Communist authorities "We might have, therefore, today at the same time as the Prague County Action Committee announced its plans for bringing all forces to bear in ensuring support for the new laws and the Catholic Action-the Government-sponsored movement which the Catholic Church has denounced as "schismatic."
