by

Group Captain

H. S. L. DUNDAS, DSO, DFC.

FTER more than five years' preparation, the 180-

ton Brabazon airliner has flown.

In the past, what has been the fate of sonsa- tionally largo aeroplanes? Generally they have been a flop.

Biggest before the war was Germany's DO-X, which weighed 50 tons, carried 50 passengers.

After three years of round-the-world flag-waving its

great hulk was retired to a Berlin museum.

. In 1942 the Americans built the Mars, a 70-ton flying boat. This still files and has broken all records by carrying 308 passengers nt a time.

But airline operators have shown no interest in buying the boat.

Why? Because the Mars is too big to be a good commercial proposition..

Flown once

A second monster flying boat, the Hercules, has been built in the US.
