HOPES FOR GOOD RESULTS

AT WASHINGTON TALKS

Washington, Aug. 24. The United States Secretary of the Treasury, Mr John Snyder, today opposed increasing the dollar value of gold as a means of relieving Britain's dollar shortage.

Mr Snyder, who will be Chairman of the Anglo-Canadian-American financial talks, opening here in September, emphasised at a Press con- ference today that there had been no change what- ever in his previously stated opposition to in- creasing the fixed price of $35 an ounce, which the United States Government pays for gold, and thus devaluing the dollar in terms of gold.

Mr Snyder asked the corres~ | pondents who questioned him about

this proposal to assist Britain: "Are WO
