London, June 19.--Ted Schroeder, America's favourite, and 127 other top tennis amateurs start playing on Wimbledon Men's Singles Tennis Championship, one of the world's

··most valuable sports prizes.

One post-war winner, Jack Kramer, reckoned the title was worth half of the US$115,000 be made in the first year after turning professional. The balance of that small fortune was contributed by his other tennis honours, the United States Singles Championship and the Davis Cup.

Many other Wimbledon' champions-Don Budge, Fred Perry and Bobby Riggs--have used Wimbledon as a stepping stone to lucrative professional

careers.

Who will win the 1940 title in the final on July 1?

Will The New Type Ball Brighten Up Cricket?

BY PETER DITTON

What is wrong with English cricket? That question has been arked so many times since the end of the war that people are get- ting sick of hearing it. But there is something wrong, and the lack of pace bowlers is not the only reason why the bat is so fréquently the master of the ball,

The game needs a change. R. W. V. 'Cock Robins, of Middlesex and Learle England fame, has suggested that the size of the bat be reduced. Constantine the great West Indian all-rounder is among those who have advocated the use of a smaller ball. "It need not necessarily weigh less," Con- stantine has said, "But the smaller ball will give the bowler much more opportunity of beating the bat.”

Yes, cricket needs some revolutionary idea to bring new life into the game. There are all sorts of suggestions in the air at the moment, from making the stumps two inches wider and an inch higher, to making the pitch two yards shorter.
