Missing Trump King Overtrumped To Win

SIDE GLANCES

BY: WILLIAM E. MoKENNEY

TODAY'S hand was sent to me

by G. Gordon McLeod of Ot tawa, Canada, with a compli ment which I appreciated.

Mr McLeod is attempting to! write a small book on bridge for beginners, though he admits ho is just an averago player him- solt. Perhaps in that case lo will have a better understanding of the problems of the beginner. In today's hand it looked up it declarer would have some trouble in trumping out all of hila losers, and still pick up the king -ot trumpe. West made the tricky opening of the four of hearts, which East won with the king. He returned the clight of i trearts, and when Mr. McLeod in

West now shifted to the six of clubs and East'a ten was captured by declarer'a açe. Mr. McLeod

then played the four of dia- monds dummy's king. East, won the trick with the ace of diamonds and returned the deuce of clubs to dummy's king.

The opponents now had their book. True, if declarer could Anesse the queen of spades and pick up the trumps, he still could make a contract. He led the jack of spades from dummy, and when East did not cover, de clarer let it ride. Next the three of spades was led and the ten- spot finessed. West showed out.

Nice Uming from this point on was required to make the hand. McLeod trumped a heart. In dummy and led the queen diamonds, on which he discarded his last heart.

Now all hands were down to the four cards underlined. The jack of diamonds was led from dummy and East was helpless, He trumped with-the-king--of spaces, McLeod overtrumped with the ace, ruffed his losing club in dummy and led back the ten of diamonds. East trumped and once agala Mcleod over- trumped The queen of clubs -was good for the last trick.
