Gaol For Three US Communists

CONTEMPT OF COURT

New York, June 3.--Federal Judge Harold Medina today lost patience with the evasive, dilatory tactics of the 11 Communist lo adors undergoing trial on a charge of conspiring to overthrow the government, ordered three-defen. dants to gaol, and warned the defence lawyers that they faced possiblo disciplinary action.

Mr Medina sent J. Gates, editor of the Communist Daily Workor, to gaol for 30 days for contempt of court when, during cross.examina- tion, he refused to answer questions, especially when asked the names of some members of the "Veterans Committee of the Communist Party" which he had organized after the war.

Mr Medina also revoked tho, protested against ball of defendants Henry Win-tence. sion and Gus IIall and remand- ed them to goal for the darn of the trial when

ON PROGRESS

IN MALAYA

London, June 3.-The Colonial Secretary. Mr Arthur Creech Jones, told the House of Commons today that security forces had made "extraordinary progress" in the last few months in stamping out Communist terrorism in Malaya.

No estimate could be given now of how. long the rebels would, carry on terrorist acts, but he hoped that it would not be "too.pro- tracted."

Ar Creech Jones, replying to question by fr Woodrow Wyalt, Labour member recently back from Malaya, kald that the British Government had tried since the war to give more and

and more administrativo

financial responsibility colonial territories.

Mr Wyatt complained that not crough was being

done by Government officials in Malaya to encourage the formation of a strong trade union movement and to get non-Europeans into the civil service, even if it meant that efficiency suffered for a time.
