We kill the last sentry between us and freedom
Peter Howard and John Clinton are nearing the end of the long, hazardous journey which began when they tunnelled their way out of the German prison camp Stalag Luft III.
They reached Stettin, on the Baltic, and there .contacted. Sigmund, a member of the Danish resistance movement. He smuggled them aboard a ship, captained by one Petersen, who landed them secretly in Denmark.
They are now in German-occupied Copenhagen, again waiting to meet Petersen, whose ship is due to carry them on to neutral Sweden. It is late October. 1943.
