Lords Seek To Hold

Up Steel Bill Until After Election

London, May 24. — The battle over the Government's Bill to nationalise most of the iron and steel industry today moved from the House of Commons, where it has been passed, to the House of Lords.

In this mainly hereditary Chamber, the Conservatives, who have a big majority, pro- posed to give the Bill a second reading-agree- ment in principle-but decided to put down an amendment to it.

The date for the transfer has been fixed for May 1, 1950, when about 100 of the major firms, with a total issued capital of about £195,- 000,000 and employing about 300,000 workers, are to be taken over by the Government.

Gold Dealings Ban Driving Asiatics To Communism

Hongkong, May 25-The current inter- national restrictions on the sale of gold were an important reason why the Asiatic was being driven to Communism, an Buthoritative source, representing big Hongkong banking interests, said here today.

He said that the basic reason for the recent depreciation of the Hongkong dollar on the unofficial money market was that the Asiatic wanted gold, and the International Monetary Fund was depriving him of getting it by legitimate means..

The source said that the Asiatic recognised only one currency, which was: hard coin or its equivalent in specić.
