Pacific Pact Depends Solely On Asian Nations

OFFICIAL U.S. ATTITUDE

Washington, May 15.-United States officials believe that the Asian nations must decide for themselves, without any outside prodding or encouragement, whether they want a Pacific defence pact similar to the Atlantic alliance and whether they can achieve a firm foundation on which to base it.

If the Asian nations can agres among them.. selves on the necessity for aPacific pact, and it they can achieve the premilinary economic co- operation which the United States Government believes to be `n necessary basis for · any such arrangement, then the U.S. will have a sympa. thetic ear to any requests for "marginal assic- tance."

That, in general, is what United States ofl- cials have told representatives of various Eastern nations who have urged such a pact with Ameri can participation.
