The Key Man

By PETER DITTON

Left-half and captain of his club; right-half and captain of England-that is the dual role played by fair-haired, 24-year-old Billy Wright, footballing genius of Wolverhampton Wanderers. He is so much the complete footballer that wherever he was chosen he would not be out of place. For proof of his versatility one has only to recall the first semi-final tie with Manchester United this season when Wright started at left-half, switched to left-back when Pritchard was injured and then to right-back when Kelly was hurt.

In all three positions he played superbly, and he" is just as much at home in the forward line. Indeed, he was first chosen to play for England in 1946 at inside-left but reverted to right-half when Frank Soo was injured and had to drop out. From that time forward his place in the England team has been assured and he looks like being a permanency for many years to come.
