Oxford are willing, and Cambridge unwilling, that the Boat Race on March 26 shall be televised from a helicopter. So now it will not happen.

Paul Burcher, the Cambridge president, thinks that a helicopter over- hend at the start would give everyone the jilters and that there is enough noise already. His coach agrees with him.

All the thrills were crammed into the last 90 minutes of the day's play, as South Africa had declared their second innings closed at 187 for three wickets.

This left England needing to score 172 runs in 95 minutes to win, as they had led by 16 runs on the first innings, and they scored 174 for 7 wickets. From the start they went for the runs.

Hutton and Washbrook scored 58 for the first wicket in 27 minutes and the hundred went up in 63 minutes.

Still needing eight runs with about-five minutes left, Crapp hit 4, 2, 4 off successive balls from Norman Mann, and the match was won.

Today's win was as thrilling as that in the first Test, at Durban, where England won off the last ball.
