UNDERGROUND CANAL-A barge walts at a lock to be dropped into the covered section of the subler- ranean St Martin Canal in Paris. Built in the early 19th century as an open canal to cut off a 65-mile trip on the meandering Sclne River, two miles of it were covered over in the 20th century to ease surface trafic. Barges are dropped 102 feet during the trip by means of nine pairs of locks.
