FRENCH WAREHOUSES—The bombproof concrete shelters bullt by the Germans in French ports to protect their submarines are now being used by the French Navy as warehouses. Allied bombing was largely wasted on the steel-roofed sheds with concrete walls 20 feet thick. This general view of a shed in Bordeaux harboar shows the size of the structure and thickness of the walls. The storage space is a much-needed item in the war-torn and inadequately housed arca.
STILL TAKES MUSCLES-High speed mechanical logging operations in Stevens, Ontario, are made necessary by the increased world demand for paper. The operation starts with "ho use of this gas-powered saw which fells trees in`ave minutes. Mechanical difficulties cause workers to prefer axe and hand saw.

rationing programme.

HARBOUR SWEEPER-The City of New York's new "Driftmaster" goes for a trial spin in the harbour. The 100-foot Diesel-propelled vessel has two hulls with nets stretched between. Floating debris, a serious menace to navigation, is scooped up and dumped at a disposal point in the bay.

ANZIO REVISITED-Twice-wounded Louis Gallo of the Third US, Infantry Division and Brooklyn, New York, looks over the beach on which he landed at Anzio five years ago. A rusty landing bargo and barbed wire are tangible reminders of the grim struggle at the Italian beach-head.
