The third day of the Jockey Club's, annual meet- ing started today with an exciting finish to the first race, which was won by Rose Emmo (A. Ostrou- moff) by a neck from Jeep Lee (H. Maitland). In turn Jeep Lee captured second placo by a neck from Do- minion Day (C. L. Gregory).

Rose Emme paid her backers $40.20 for a win.

FIRST PRIZE OF $765,762 FOR LUCKY SWEEP WINNER

The 1949 Hongkong Derby was won this afternoon at Happy Valley by Golden Dahlia. - The jockey was Mr W. K. Shich. Egyptian Field was second, and Ben Wyvis third. race was over a mile and a half, and the time was 2:43-4/5.

There were only six starters: Ben Wyvis (D. Black), Egyptian Field (C. L. Gregory), Golden Dahlia (W. K. Shieh), Highlight (J. Pote-Hunt), Shun Fung (H. Maitland) and Skymaster (B. L. Tao).

A dense crowd packed the rails to watch the race.

Skymaster drew the rail posi- tion and took the lead at the start, but lost it to Ben Wyvis when coming into the straight for the first time.

When the

fleld came into the home stretch for the second time, Egyptian Field was leading, but Golden Dahlia moved up spectacularly and romped home to win.

Egyptian Field was two lengths bebind in second place, and Ben Wyvis was many lengths behind in third.
