Influenza Still Evades

Adequate Control

UNDERSTANDING epidemic would be effective

influenza has grown apace dur- ing the past few years, but even so the disease sill evades control.

Influenza is caused by a virus, and the two common strains of this tiny troublemaker have been iso Inted and identified as influenza A anct influenza B. Fear of a disas- trous outbreak, such as that experi- eticed in 1910, spurred research dur- ing the late war, with the result that scientists learned

something about when an epidemic of infuenan might be expected to strike. It was determined that in the United States epidemics of influenza A 'have oc- curred at two-to three-y'car inter- vals, while those due to influenza B recurred in a four to six-year pat- tern.

Not only this, but a vaccine for the prevention of influenza was pro- duced. Containing both strains of the virus. It was thought that it

And then suddenly, during the epidemies of 1048 and 1947, the vaccine seemed to lose its power to combat the virus. Usually, those who had been immunised fell ill with just as great frequency as those who had not...

A search for the causo. of this unexpected failure of a vaccine, which had proved so valuable dur- ing the immediately preceding years,, led to the conclusion that the virus strains hind undergone some mysterious change. In some way not yet understood, the virus had been able· to alter its con- stitution just enough to maice it Im- pervious to the antibodies built up in the blood by the vaccine.

Thus today for all our research we are not much further forward. Unless new strains of the virus can be isolated from ensen in advance
