NANKING TROOPS NEARING CITY

Nanking, Dec. 2.-The Chinese Communist forces stormed into Hsuchow, 200 miles northwest of Nanking, after three weeks of bitter fighting, the Communist radio claimed today. But the Reds were losing the crucial two-day battle near Pengpu, about midway between Hsuchow and Nanking, and pres- sure on Nanking itself was relieved for the time being.

The Communist broadcast said the Reds had occupied Hsuchow and termed it the "most important Kuomintang military base north of the Yangtze River." It claimed that an entire division of Presi- dent Chiang Kai-shek's personal troops surrendered to the Communists southwest of Hsuchow.

Lt-Gen. Teng Wen-yi, Chiang's Defence Ministry spokesman, said that Hsuchow has "lost its strategic im- portance," a statement which is usually the prelude to an announcement that a city has fallen.
