The Deweyites stil have Jobs, for Tom Dewey, although counted out for ever as a Presidential candi- date, stays on as Governor of New York until 1950.

But some of the Trumanites will not have jobs for long. As convinced na everyone else of Truman's dafent, most of his best friends ratted on him.

T THE TOP of the list for Truman disciplinary

A action are James Forrestal, his Secretary of De

fence, and Robert Lovett, Marshall's chief assistant.

Next most worried men in America today are the "cientific" pollsters. Truman, who had taunted them as "sleeping pools," predicted the final result almost exactly.

But Dr George Gallup, of the Gallup Poll, gave Dewey 49.5 percent of the popular vote, and Truman only 44.5 percent. And actually it was almost exactly the other way round.

Gallup's excuse: "Truman staged a strong upsurge in the closing days."

YET

VET ANOTHER worried American is a man who is still trying to fight the civil war between North and South-Strom Thurmond, the keep-the-Negroes- down candidate from the Southlands.

German naval secrets were made public recently. They throw fresh light on the greatest riddle of the war:

WHY DIDN'T HITLER INVADE ENGLAND?

HY did Hitler fall to invade England in 1940? The question is the most fascinating mystery of the war.

New light is thrown on the A book published mystery in today, called Hitler and His Admirals (Secker and Warburg, 158.). The author, Mr Anthony Martienssen, provides a com- prehensive, authentic and ab- sorbing story of the downfall of the German navy and of what happened in 1940. From this book, art from what we alrendy know from

other sources, the many jigsaw bits of information now begin to form some

definite and intel- ligible picture.

It was Raeder, the German navy's C-in-C, who first en- visaged the possibility of a Cross-Chunnel invasion of Eng- land. For as long ago as Novem- ber 15, 1939, ho ordered his staff to prepare the necessary, plans.

The detailed German naval plans for the invasion of Britain after the fall of France in 1940 have been revealed, for the first time, in a book published in London. With this new material in front of him, Mil- ton Shulman sums up all that is now known about the Great Invasion Mystery.
