Changes In Hsuchow Battlefront

ALL COMMUNIST ATTACKS REPORTED REPULSED

Nanking, Nov. 16.-Contrary to carlier indepen dent reports all Communist armies around Hsuchow, the Government bastion in North Kiangsu, were officially reported tonight to be moving northward in what was described as a general withdrawal.

A communique issued by the Ministry of National Defence, confirming earlier pro-Govern- ment reports, said Communist forces under General Chen Yi, on the eastern flank of Hauchow, continued their retreat northward and eastward in the direc- - tion of Taierchueng, Tancheng and Hainan, across the Shantung-Kiansu border.

It claimed heavy casualties, totalling 93,000 men, had been inflicted upon the Reds, while 8,000 Com munista in Janchuan and Payichi ́areas had surren- dered with their arms to the Government forces.

Late despatches tonight also claimed Communist armies withdrawing from south and west of Hsuchow: stating that as the Rede retreated “in complete dis order," they were "pursued by column after column of Government troops and strafed by Chinese Air Force planes overhead.”
