Attempt To End Soviet Diplomatic Strike

RUSSIANS MAY PREFER A CONFLICT TO COMPROMISE

Paris, Oct. 14.-It was disclosed today that "neutral" countries in the United Nations Security Council would attempt tomorrow to break Russia's diplomatic sitdown strike against consideration of the Berlin crisis.

Under the lead of Dr Juan Bramuglia of Argentina, the delegates of six countries prepared a list of questions to be put to Russia and the Western Allies when the Council takes up the crisis. If they can get the Russian dele- gate, Andrei Vyshinsky, to answer, his sitdown strike will be broken.

Delegates from Western areas believe, however, that Mr Vyshinsky will refuse to answer questions; in line with his announcement that he would take no part in consideration of the Berlin situation.

Mr Dallas Bernard, managing director of Jardine, Matheson and Co.. from 1925 to 1928, is to become Deputy Governor of the Bank of Englund, according to a Reuter message from London.

Mr Bernard, who is 60, was elected to the Court of Directors of the Bank of England in 1936.

BIG SEIZURE OF OPIUM

Melbourne, Oct. 14-Australian customs men here today seized 330 lbs. weight of opium worth about £22,000 aboard the 0,975 tons motor vessel Chanda owned by the British India Steamship Navigation Com- pany.
