In the hotel which is just up the road from the "hub of the Empire" it is rather quiet and the lights are low.

It is almost the Mecca of the middle-aged. Here come the semi-sophisticated suburbanites (London, N.W., predominating), the young matrons who have not yet learned to play bridge, the single girls searching for some thing socially above the public dance-balls.

They meel the men who would like the Buaye-sounding "lounge lizard" lable. but who. on closer inspection, seein to be divided into two. There is the colonial-type Englishman on three months' enve from car-

I asked Paulette herself about it. She popped into accrel "creating rooms" in the back and brought out a flower pot covered in canvas.
