PARIS.

HERE is a shadow over France that is growing larger and taking substance more rapidly every day. It is the shadow of General Charles de Gaulle and his double-barred Cross

of Lorraine-a symbol known the world over since the days of the fighting Free French during the war.

Few persons in France todny would risk the prediction that General de Gaullo, will not come to power. Most people, even though they may not be in agreement with him, consider this "almost inevitable."

But General de Gaulle is dis- satisfied with the slow progress of his bid for power. Ila is now calling for fan mail to emphasise his popularity.

MONEY TOO THEN Dr Queuille upact, even

if only temporarily, de Gaulle's programme. Queuille's resounding votes of confidence from the Assembly were due more to the general's shadow than to a popular belief in the stability of the new Govern-

ment.

The general has two capable henchmen, whose job it is to watch the political trends.

No. 1 ia Jneques Soustelle, a professor of natural history, 36 years old, burly, square-jawed, and energetic.

No. 2 is Andre Malraux, slight, intellectual, former Com- but nervous, munist writer,

ith an almost uncanny ability to know the mood both of po liticians and the man-in-the- street.

The first move by these two inner Cabinet" members of de Gaulle was to adviso the would- be leader of France to make no more speeches. They asked him to go straight to the country in an unofficial election-a test of personal popularity, as well a considerable source of as
