In the fourth round match he met Earnest Cochell of San Francisco who
wept the little player, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, with devastating thoroughness.
While in the Filipino's opening two matches he managed to bring into play his superb retrieving game, Cochell, lanky 24-year-old who, ex- perts believe, has good chances of upsetting the favourites, never gave

Colchell's finely sharpened back hand as well as his sizzling forehand drives kept the tiny little Filipino racing from one corner of the court to the other.
Ampon's attempts to rush the net were met with hot drives which passed him accurately for points and he abandoned this technique.
While Cocheil continued to show all-around superiority. Ampon could not bring into play his favourite lob shot, because Cochell's sharpness forced him to shoot beyond the base
linc.
IN QUARTER-FINALS Cochell, meanwhile, rarely ven- tured to the net, preferring to slug it out from the baseline. Cochell, ifth seeded, became the first player to enter the quarter-finals.

ARSENAL HAS A PROBLEM OF AGE
·By ARCHIE QUICK
Arsenal are a firm rock on which the tide of professional football's popularity dashes and recedes unabated. The club has its own critics, in fact the very name of Arsenal is enough to arouse some people to unimagined heights of fury, especially, for instance, if they are Chelsen supporters.
.*
But for the great mass of the soccer public, both in London and in the provinces, and among professional players themselves, Arsenal ștands for all that is best in the game. That is proved by the number of Whittaker's
vory earnest and ground records they hold. The capable attention. majority of fans were glad when the League Championship went to Highbury last Benson although Manchester United were voted the team of the year with the Cup and second place in the league cham- pionship.
It was a pear thing In the end, but Arsenal's great beginning of the season was an advantage over the slow-starting United and just en- abled the Gunners to keep their
